Martinique: Home to a distant heart

In this series, I explore the landscape of Martinique by capturing its vibrant, resilient flora and drawing a parallel between the island's natural beauty and its people. From celebrated flowers like the Porcelain rose, Alpinia (red ginger), Balisier, and Heliconia beacon to the overlooked pokeweed, each plant embodies a spirit of survival and vitality. The vivid reds and lush greenery of these tropical plants thrive in untamed environments, symbolizing strength and endurance. Alongside these blooms, I also photographed the decaying leaves and jungle life, reflecting the passage of time, the cycle of seasons, and the transformative power of nature.

This variety of flora mirrors the cultural and historical resilience of the people of Martinique. Shaped by the legacy of colonialism, they continue to endure and adapt while preserving their unique identity. Through my lens, I aim to capture the duality of nature - its beauty, fragility, and transformation - alongside the raw, enduring spirit of the island’s inhabitants, highlighting how both the land and its people survive and thrive in the face of challenges.
